DRYWALL TEXTURE & FINISHING

Taping, coating, sanding, and texture — the stage that decides whether a wall looks custom or looks cheap. We finish to the level the job calls for and match existing textures room to room.

Levels of finish, in plain language

The industry defines drywall finishes in levels. Specifying the right one keeps you from paying for work you do not need — or from being disappointed by a wall that shows every seam.

  • Level 1-2: fire taping and utility areas such as garages and above ceilings
  • Level 3: surfaces receiving a heavy texture
  • Level 4: the common residential standard, for flat paints and light textures
  • Level 5: a skim coat over the entire surface — required for gloss paint, dark colors, and critical raking light such as large windows and wall sconces

Textures we spray and trowel

  • Knockdown — sprayed, allowed to set, then flattened with a knife
  • Orange peel / splatter — the most common SoCal wall texture
  • Skip trowel and hand-troweled Santa Barbara style finishes
  • Smooth level 5 for modern and contemporary interiors
  • Custom match of an existing pattern, tested on scrap before we touch the wall

Why smooth walls cost more

A true smooth wall has nowhere to hide. It requires a full skim coat, more sanding time, and lighting checks from multiple angles. When a client asks for smooth, we quote it as smooth — not as a level 4 wall with extra sanding — so the result matches the expectation.

Dust control and sanding

We mask openings, run vacuum sanding where the space calls for it, and clean up compound dust rather than leaving it in the HVAC returns. In occupied homes we contain the work area before sanding starts.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Can you match my existing texture exactly?

+

In almost every case, yes. We identify the pattern, test on scrap, and adjust the spray or trowel until it blends with the surrounding surface.

Should I choose smooth or textured walls?

+

Smooth reads modern and shows off lighting, but shows imperfections and future patches more. Texture hides minor movement and is easier to repair later. We will walk you through the tradeoff for your rooms.

Do you do fire taping for garages?

+

Yes. We fire tape garage and rated assemblies to the required finish level.
